How To Get Your Home Ready For Winter

The nights are drawing in fast and temperatures are beginning to drop as we inch towards the autumn and winter months.

As the weather starts to turn we rely on our home more, spending a greater number of hours indoors than we would during the summer. You’ll obviously want to have a comfortable living environment throughout the day, but this will only be the case if your property is fully thermally efficient. The most telling signs that your residence isn’t energy efficient enough are noticeable draughts and cold spots.

To rid them from your home before winter really bites, we can recommend the following energy efficient measures:

1. New windows and doors

Around 20% of heat loss in the home occurs because of poorly insulating windows and doors. Replacing them for the best thermally efficient windows and doors will make a huge difference, eradicating much of this heat loss and better retaining the warmth produced by your heating system.

2. Buy some thicker curtains

If the purse strings are too tight to buy new windows and doors you could always invest in some thicker curtains to keep heat trapped inside. Draw them as soon as it starts to go dark, making sure there are no gaps between the curtains.

3. Have your boiler serviced

The nightmare scenario of suffering a boiler breakdown in the midst of a freezing winter can be averted by having it serviced by a professional now. It may even transpire that you would benefit from a brand new boiler installation, something that should last 12-15 years when you have it checked annually.

4. Ditch the summer clothes

Sorry to break it to you so abruptly, but summer is officially over! Put all those summer outfits to the back of the wardrobe and dig out your winter jumpers for wearing out and around the house.
