A+ Plus Windows

A+ Plus UPVC double glazed windows are among the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly products available from Orion Windows. These particular windows are even better at insulating your house and keeping it warm than their predecessors – A rated windows. Owing to the continued development and improvement of the products and methods that we use A+ Plus windows will make your home more energy efficient than ever before; this means that they will reduce your reliance on artificial heating systems which are nearly always expensive to run and harmful to the environment. A+ Plus windows achieve this by preventing internal heat from escaping, but also by allowing external warmth from the sun to pass into your home to create a naturally warmer room temperature.

A+ plus windows are the most energy efficient available...

    • The Window Energy Rating (WER) scheme offers an uncomplicated guide to the energy efficiency of windows, using the familiar A – G ‘green to red’ traffic light system that is seen on numerous other products, such as properties, vehicles and electrical items.

A-rated windows were, until recently, thought of as being the most efficient on the market, with Building Regulations instructing that replacement windows should be at least C-rated or above.

A+ Plus windows have however overtaken A-rated windows under the Window Energy Rating Scheme to offer an optimum balance of thermal efficiency and value for money. Thanks to our continued product development, we are pleased to be able offer these top of the range products to the customers of Orion Windows.

    • ‘Energy efficiency’ can mean different things depending on the product it is describing. In terms of new uPVC windows , energy efficiency  considers how effectively the window minimises your dependence on energy burning heating systems by both limiting the amount of warmth that is allowed to escape from your home, and by making the most of heat from the sun – a premise known as ‘solar gain’.

Windows with an A+ Plus rating essentially insulate your home in the same way that cavity wall and loft insulation does, however with the use of intelligent double glazing, not only is internal warmth restricted from escaping but natural warmth from the sun is allowed into the room, and so the benefits are even greater.

A refined arrangement of the glass, gasses and other materials used in the production of our double glazed units make this possible, resulting in a shorter and less frequent reliance on expensive heating systems, be it a radiator, burning fire, gas or electric heater.

    • If you own a home, you will be familiar with the fact that heating bills are pricey, and despite the availability of many pre-pay, fixed and variable tariffs, it is more than likely that you will be looking to lower the energy costs of your home so that you have more disposable income for the things in life that matter.

Conservative calculations suggest that modern uPVC windows will be fit for purpose for at least 20 years; some go as far to suggest that 35 years is more accurate, considering the inherent qualities of the materials and manufacturing processes used. By switching to A+ Plus windows from Orion, you will be making an investment in the truest sense and one that will be more than repaid over the lifetime of the product.

    • The importance of looking after the world that we live in and reducing the carbon footprint of our homes is becoming ever more apparent. More and more people are striving to reduce their carbon emissions, whether that be by recycling appropriate materials, turning off lights, switching appliances off ‘standby’ or car sharing.

Often the idea of installing energy efficient windows is overlooked when thinking of ways to be more environmentally friendly, but as windows usually account for up to a quarter of a buildings surface area- maybe even more - having poorly performing windows can have a great impact on the carbon footprint your house will leave on the environment.

While they are an integral part of modern day living, the use of gas boilers, electric radiators and coal fires all have a negative impact in the environment. If your windows are old or inefficient, they will let the heat generated from these sources out of your house, meaning you will rely on them much more heavily during the cold winter months. Many Orion Windows’ customers comment that their home is naturally and noticeably warmer once they have had A+ Plus windows fitted and their reliance on artificial heat sources are far less.

Our A+ Plus Windows bring together a window frame with 5 insulating chambers...

    • Whether it is double or triple glazing, the glass units used in an A+ Plus window have a large say in its overall performance, but there are many other important features that often go unnoticed.

The glass unit itself is made up of a collection of researched materials that control the movement of heat between the indoors and outdoors – natural heat from the sun is allowed to pass into your home, while internal warmth is stopped from leaving you home.

Working with the insulating properties of the double glazed or triple glazed unit our A+ Plus Windows bring together a window frame with five insulating chambers, and a sash frame with an impressive six insulating chambers and a bubble gasket which performs in much the same way, and is just as important, as the seal on your fridge freezer.

    • The external frame of a window is the part which is secured to the walls of your home; this will literally provide a frame for the opening sashes to be fitted in to. Window outer frames and sashes – often rectangular or square, but sometimes different shapes – are made from lengths of uPVC ‘profile’ which is designed to complement residential properties, provide thermal insulation, and be easy to install into the home.

Insulating sections in the outer frame and sash work with the insulation naturally provided by uPVC and the double or triple glazing unit is fixed in place using an internal glazing bead which has additional security benefits.

The outer frame profile has five insulating chambers and the innovative and new sash profile boasts no fewer than six insulating chambers - steel reinforcing can be added into these chambers for additional strength if required.

    • A double glazed glass unit is made up of four headline components: the outer pain, a warm-edge spacer bar, the inner pane and gas which fills the gap which is created by the two panes of glass and spacer bar.  The design of the outer pain lets natural light and warmth into your home whereas the inner pane has a special coating applied which reflects heat back into the room as it tries to escape through the window.

The ‘warm-edge’ spacer bar is made of a composite material that is much less conductive than aluminium spacer bars which are still used by many, but in fact weaken the energy efficiency potential of the window. The cavity left in between the two pieces of glass is filled with a dense gas called Argon which provides more resistance to heat loss than dry air.

Of course as the name suggests, triple glazing involves the use of three panes of glass – two of which are specially coated – in order to create two insulating cavities that are both filled with Argon gas.

    • Despite energy efficiency being a top priority when choosing new windows, we understand that there are of course other boxes that need to be ticked by the product. One of these is obviously excellent and reassuring security. We use high specification locking mechanisms, hinges, and handles that have been extensively tested to ensure that your home, family and possessions are kept safe and protected.

Just ask your design consultant for more information about the exact specification of your chosen product.

    • Factoring-in all the performance factors of a window the WER (Window Energy Rating) scheme takes into account both the insulation and solar gain levels to arrive at a final classification. Our A+ Plus 28mm double glazed windows have an index rating of A+10 on this scale.

Another measure of a window’s performance U-Value which is a rating given according solely to the amount of heat which is lost through the window. Those products with a lower U-Value score are better at performing as an insulator and therefore will be better for keeping warmth inside your home.

Our double glazed A+10 windows have a U-value of 1.3 w/m²K which, compared to single glazed windows with a typical U-value of 5.1 w/m²K and early examples of double glazing that are often in the region of 2.8 w/m²K, will deliver a notable difference in natural room temperature.

    • With an index rating of A+21, our 36mm triple glazed windows are official classified as an A++ (Plus-Plus) window by the recently revised Window Energy Rating (WER) scheme.

U-Value is a different measure of a windows performance and this separate metric concerns itself solely with the amount of heat lost through a window - the lower the U-value figure the better the window is at acting as an insulator for your home. As a result of a third pane of glass, a second insulating compartment is created within the unit, and whilst the appearance is almost identical to double glazed products, our triple glazed A+21 Windows have a U-Value of just 1.0 w/m²K, making them more efficient and ideal for properties in extremely cold regions.

    • Privacy glazing offers an effective solution for sufficiently obscuring the view through a window without considerably impacting on the amount of sunlight that is allowed into your home.  Commonly used for most bathrooms, and occasionally within the sidelights of a front door, privacy glazing can be incorporated into either A+ Plus double or A++ triple glazed products.

A great investment for your home, the combination of both privacy and energy efficiency are delivered simultaneously, and are offered using a range of glass designs which each create a different visual effect with textured patterns such as Stippolyte, Minster and Florielle. Please ask your design consultant about the full range of textured glass and the levels of privacy that each pattern provides.
