What’s The Story Behind Heritage Windows?

Replacement windows sold as ‘heritage windows’ are designs that have been styled to imitate the look of traditional window styles and are manufactured using age-old techniques.

They’re often selected as a window replacement for late 19th and early 20th century residences, particularly homes designated as ‘Listed’ or sitting within a conservation area.

Planners are welcoming of heritage windows for installation into historic residences because they identify how well they can sustain the original aesthetic of period buildings, far more successfully than most other window systems.

Time-honoured designs for the modern age

Heritage windows have all the charm of traditional timber windows, coming with an authentic wood effect finish and built to similar proportions, making them an obvious replacement for old wooden windows.

Wooden windows are notorious for eroding as they get older in age and once their structural integrity diminishes, it’s very hard to restore them back to how they were, which can lead to draughts, poor insulation etc.

Heritage windows are built using UPVC or aluminium profiles, two weather-resistant materials, so they won’t lose their strength.

Versions of a heritage window

Flush sash windows lead from the front when it comes to heritage windows, a celebrated design with openers that close into the window frame to produce a flat finish.

A separate window option that falls into the category of being a heritage design is the cottage window, characterised by its Georgian bar detailing, perfect if you want a cottage-like aesthetic.

The Georgian bars create a grid formation on the window pane (either vertically or horizontally) and this detail makes it look as though the cottage window is composed of multiple small glazed sections.

Gaining popularity by the day

The heritage window market is booming right now. If you have a look around at houses in your local area, there’s every chance that you will see that some of them have heritage window designs.

Many of them will include old cottages and listed properties, but don’t be surprised if you also spot a new-build or modern residence with flush sash windows or cottage windows in an attempt to give it a fashionably antiquated appearance.
