FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Due to the many possibilities from our window range, Orion customers often benefit from our guidance. Glance through our FAQs and speak to a member of the team for additional advice.
What's the difference between flush and casement windows?

By definition, the casement is the part of a window that moves when you open and close it. Most standard windows are ‘lipped’, meaning that the casements sit above the window frame.

A flush casement window is different because the casement is flush with the frame, as you would expect from the name. This gives it a sleek and neat appearance. Visit our York showroom to see the two options next to each other so you can decide which is more suited to your home.

Should I invest in double glazed or triple glazed windows?

As you’d expect, triple glazing has three panes of glass within the window, whereas double glazing has two. Each has their own advantages, and therefore it could be beneficial for you to speak to an Orion advisor before settling on your chosen glazing.

Typically, triple glazing does a better job at preventing draughts and reducing the amount of heat that escapes from the home. For homeowners who live on busy roads, triple glazed windows are often selected for their ability to block out street noise.

Is there a difference between PVC Windows, PVCu Windows & UPVC Windows

There is zero difference. They are all ways of referring to PVC-U windows, which is the correct term.

PVC is an abbreviation for Poly Vinyl Chloride and the U is an abbreviation for Un-plasticised. Most people are familiar with the term PVC as it is used for faux leather bags and shoes.

The term UPVC was officially changed in the 1980’s to be the same as other European countries. Most European languages add the noun prior to the adjective, the noun being PVC and the adjective being U.

Pure PVC-U needs to have a small amount of additives added before it can be used for windows and doors. This will lead to a longer life of the products, in addition to high weathering and UV resistance.

What colours are Orion’s windows and doors available in?

There are far more colour options than you would expect in our range of finishes. You definitely won’t be restricted to just white!

There’s no denying that windows look classically appealing in white or cream, but you always have the option to choose something a bit different. We have a number of more unique finishes such as Matte Black and a wide collection of popular grey shades such as Hazy Grey, Olive Grey and Anthracite Grey.

If you are looking for something to rival the look of timber, our woodgrain finishes are the perfect substitute and they are much more durable. Finishes such as Rosewood make a strong statement.

Why not consider our dual finishes? You can select one colour for the exterior of the window and one for the interior.

What does an 'A' rated window mean?

The Window Energy Rating (WER) should let you know the energy efficiency of that particular window. You may have noticed energy ratings on your white goods, which use a A+ – G scale. You’ll find them on fridges, freezers and washing machines.

A+ rated windows are the most energy efficient you can get. All new and replacement windows must have a minimum Window Energy Rating of C or higher.

Working with the insulating properties of the double glazed or triple glazed unit our A+ Plus Windows bring together a window frame with five insulating chambers, and a sash frame with an impressive six insulating chambers and a bubble gasket which performs in much the same way, and is just as important, as the seal on your fridge freezer.

Don’t hesitate to contact us for more information.

What does U-Value mean?

U-Value is another important indication of the performance of your window. The U-Value is a measurement of the energy efficiency of a window and it is measured in Watts per square metre on W/m2 K. A lower number means that the window is better at retaining internal heat.

New or replacement windows must have a necessary U-Value of at least 1.6 W/m2 K. If you have questions surrounding U-Values and energy efficiency, speak to an Orion advisor.

What is Secured by Design?

Run by the police, the Secured by Design initiative was created to enhance and upgrade the security of properties and their surroundings.

The Police Preferred Specification is an accreditation scheme devised to apply to all products that can reduce crime, and this includes domestic windows and doors and their hardware, such as locks and hinges.

We are pleased to share that our sister manufacturing company, Conservatory Outlet, is a member of Secured by Design so a large number of our products already meet the standard. If security is a particular concern to you, contact Orion to discuss.

Our windows and doors are made-to-measure so it’s difficult to issue you with a price without understanding your needs first.

We offer no-obligation, FREE design consultation appointments and we encourage you to book one with us either at our York showroom or in the comfort of your own home.

Submit a contact form to enquire about our appointments. We will work around your busy schedule to find a date that works.

How long will an appointment with your designer last?

The first appointment will typically last around 1 hour. In the initial meeting, one of our designers will discuss your requirements, paying attention to your specific wants, and talk you through our many window and door options.

How long will it take to install my new windows and doors?

We can’t give you a definite time frame for the completion of your project, without getting a few details first as all installations are different, especially as our windows are made-to-measure. Generally our team will have completed a full set of windows in 3-4 days, but this can vary on the complexity of the job. An Orion Windows advisor will be able to give you a better idea on the length of time it will take.

Do you provide finance to help me pay for windows and doors?

Yes, we can. We have many different options of finance for you, subject to application and status. Filling in an application is simple and straightforward and you will be contacted shortly after. Applying for finance can be sorted in our York showroom or even at your own home.

If finance has been sorted by Orion Windows, we will find out through the finance company at the same time as you. However, if you’ve sorted your own finance, you should contact us by phone ASAP to let us know your application has been accepted.

What do I do if finance is refused?

If finance application is not accepted, don’t worry. There are a number of possible reasons why, such as if you’ve moved properties a few times in recent years. If you do get turned down for finance, we will always try our best to help. We suggest you request finance through another provider. It helps if they know you and if you have banked through them.
