Will A Composite Or UPVC Door Be Best For Your Home?

Will A Composite Or UPVC Door Be Best For Your Home?

There’s a lot to be said for having a good front door, with multiple benefits to be gained from owning one.

Improved kerb appeal is one of them (we all like hearing people say nice things about our homes) and so is the enhanced security that comes with a quality, robust entrance door.

Upgrade your front door at the soonest opportunity if it’s failing to do your property justice in any respect and look into a UPVC door or a composite door as a possible replacement.

You’re probably already familiar with UPVC (un-plasticised polyvinyl chloride) doors, but may not be quite as clued up on composite doors.

What are composite doors?

The fact that they’re called a ‘composite’ tells you much that you need to know about composite doors, as it means they are composed of several parts or elements, which happen to be UPVC, foam, wood, and a GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) skin.

Their wood grain effect is so believable, enough to convince you that they’re purely constructed from timber, but composite doors are far sturdier and weatherproofing than traditional wooden doors.

One of the biggest strengths of a composite door is exactly that, its strength, and few composite doors are as strong as Orion’s.

The different components of a composite door

How does a composite door differ from a UPVC door?

UPVC doors are purely manufactured from plastic, and composite doors have a thicker door frame (on average, around 44mm in depth, whereas a UPVC door frame usually has a depth of about 28mm).

Buying a composite door will cost you a little more simply because more materials are used to build the product in comparison to a UPVC equivalent.

However, don’t mistake the cheaper price of a UPVC door as making it inferior to a composite door as it’s not, with it still providing exceptional thermal efficiency and security.

How do you look after a composite and UPVC door?

Every four months, wipe down their frames with warm soapy water to restore their shine, and avoid the use of solvent based cleaners or anything abrasive.

On an annual basis, lubricate the components e.g. locking mechanism and hinges, and should they need it, the handle and other door furniture too.

So that water doesn’t get into any of the door seals, remove debris from the threshold and drainage holes – monitor this intently during spells of heavy rain.
